THE CASE FOR KENNY FLORIAN

For a while there, it looked like Kenny Florian might be ‘the man’ at lightweight, despite it being a few pounds heavier than his natural weight class. His super-aggressive style has won him many admirers since even before his days on The Ultimate Fighter when he was on the bill at Mass Destruction.

His main weapons are Muay Thai and Brazilian Ju-Jitsu and the effectiveness of his martial arts skills can be seen by his numerous victories via rear naked choke. Florian has won no less than 7 of his 11 victories since joining the UFC by this method.

However, ultimately he came unstuck against the larger, more wrestling orientated fighters at lightweight and so the drop down to featherweight was by no means unexpected. There is more to Florian than just martial arts – he has a pretty good takedown defence and can strike as well. However, if he is to win against Nunes, he’s going to have to get in there early and really deliver. Nunes is an expert at wearing opponents down.

THE CASE FOR DIEGO NUNES

In many ways, Nunes and Florian are evenly matched. They both have a similar skillset – the difference is style. Nunes likes to keep his distance and wear his opponents down, picking good shots at the right times and ultimately emerging victorious. Since his WEC and latterly his UFC career began, all his wins have come by decision.

A lot of commentators are saying that Nunes is going to have to be more aggressive if he wants to win this one. For me, this would be playing into Florian’s hands and is a certain route to losing the fight. Nunes just needs to keep playing his own game and he will be in with a chance.

FLORIAN v NUNES PICK AND PREDICTION

That having been said, Florian’s aggression and attacking style is the main factor here. Even if it does go to decision, I suspect Florian will have given his all and I pick KenFlo to win.
