Headlining UFC 131 is a heavyweight match-up between Shane Carwin and Junior Dos Santos. Dos Santos, with a record of 12 wins and 1 loss, is a narrow favorite at -170 with JustBet ( 1.53 at Bodog) but it’s by no means certain that he will overcome Shane Carwin, a man with an identical win-loss record. THE CASE FOR SHANE CARWIN

With Brock Lesnar pulling out, Carwin – who Lesnar beat last time out – is back in the frame against Dos Santos. While Carwin lost the Lesnar fight, he was in control for much of the bout and, frankly, the oddsmakers should have Carwin closer to Dos Santos in the betting. Currently, you can back Carwin at best odds of +150 at BetDSI (2.5 at SportingBet ).

In terms of skill, Carwin has a superior boxing and takedown technique to Dos Santos so he is well-equipped to be able to win this fight if he gets Dos Santos to go to ground quickly. It’s a tough ask as Carwin’s natural game is to stand and fight. Tactics are everything for Carwin in this one.

THE CASE FOR JUNIOR DOS SANTOS

The one thing that Dos Santos does pretty much better than anyone else in the division is striking. I’m not even sure whether he’s any good at anything else. 8 of his 12 wins have come via T/KO and that tells you all you need to know about his style.

He’s beaten some pretty decent opponents, including Cro Cop and Fabricio Werdum but, for my money, Carwin is a better all round fighter than those guys and will prove a stiffer test. The fact that Carwin likes to fight on his feet is, I think, the main reason that Dos Santos is favorite to win this fight. Personally, though, I think Dos Santos is going to get found out here.

This is the fight where we will find out whether Dos Santos is more than a one trick pony. Even if he does have a good takedown defence, it’s hardly been honed in combat, so I pick Shane Carwin to win.
