The third top match-up of UFC 130 has got to be Rick Story v Thiago Alves. Although the welterweight division is better known for victories by decision or submission, Alves has a notable track record in knocking out his opponents. He’s done so 11 times in 18 victories, so it’s no wonder the Brazilian is ranked #3 welterweight.

Currently Alves (-205 at SportBet ) is clear favorite with the bookmakers, but I don’t think Story vs Alves will be as clear cut as they seem to believe.

PREDICTION: THE CASE FOR RICK STORY

Rick ‘Horror’ Story is coming off a run of five consecutive victories, which makes him very much the man in form. Additionally, he is an awkward competitor – he’s hard to put down (in fact, he’s never been stopped in 15 professional fights.

Story is one of those guys that just keeps coming, looking for an opportunity to finish his opponent. He’s a versatile fighter, with good wrestling and submission skills and some striking power, and this has stood him in good stead over his career.

If he can get Alves into clinches and start to wrestle, his grappling skills maybe sufficient to overcome what is a very strong takedown defence. His other shot for winning this is just to stay in Alves’ face and wear the Brazilian down, winning by decision.

PREDICTION: THE CASE FOR THIAGO ALVES

As mentioned at the top of this article, Alves has knocked out 11 opponents in a career that has taken in 25 professional fights (18-7 record). For my money, he is the best striker in the division and he knows just how to keep his fights on the feet.

This is where he is much superior to Story and I think it will be enough for Alves, who has looked a little short of his best in his last three fights, to clinch the victory. Story is a cunning fighter, but he will be stopped by the sheer power that Alves offers.
