THE CASE FOR ROY NELSON

Roy Nelson (15-5) is a monster. The man just never gives up. Just witness his loss to Junior Dos Santos last time out – he was taking some serious punishment, but just kept coming and eventually lost by decision. So it’s safe to say he isn’t going to cave in.

Looking at his record, it’s very clear his punching power is his strength – pretty much all his wins have come via T/KO. But Nelson is no one-trick pony. As the old cliche goes, for a big man, he is light on his feet and his jiu-jitsu skills are often overlooked both by UFC afficianados and opponents. His wrestling and takedown are also stronger than you may think. He can definitely win this one, but that depends on him using all his abilities together rather than just relying on power.

THE CASE FOR FRANK MIR

Mir’s record of 14 wins and 5 losses disguises the truth of his career arc. He is a far better fighter than his record suggests – a serious bike accident set him back a long way. However, his victory against Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ last time out points to the fact that Mir is getting back to his best.

For a heavyweight, Mir is extremely good off his back and his jiu-jitsu is probably the best in the division. With a reach longer than Nelson’s Mir’s striking may come into play in this fight. Overall, Mir is the more rounded fighter and is better able to bring his skills to the table. For me, Mir is the more adaptable fighter and for me, this is what will win it.
