Whatever happens at UFC 129, the legend that is Randy Couture says he’s hanging up his gloves for good. So, will his farewell fight against Lyoto Machida prove to be one last great effort or a bridge too far?

While current Couture v Machida odds suggest that the latter is a strong possibility, the romantic side of me hopes that Couture will go out, literally, with a bang.

THE CASE FOR RANDY COUTURE

Let’s take a minute to imagine it: his last ever fight. Against a far younger man (Couture is 47, while Machida is 32) - a man coming off the back of two controversial losses. Couture takes him down in the second, winning with a chokehold. Fight over. MMA career over on a high.

It would be great, wouldn’t it. However, I just can’t see it happening.

His losses against the likes of Belfort, Lesnar and Liddell point, I think, to the way that this is going to go down. Not that Couture won’t give his all. He will. He’s just a little old and a little slow now and I think he’ll get caught.

THE CASE FOR LYOTO MACHIDA

At light heavyweight, Machida looks to have the more natural poise than Couture and his, say we shall, slightly unorthodox style gives the Brazilian a clear advantage. Machida is a patient (some say boring) fighter and he’ll keep out of Couture’s way in the first couple of rounds before landing a decisive punch. If not, his counterattacking style will see Machida win this one on points.
