Which BJ Penn Will Show up at UFC 118: The Fat Loser or the Thin Winner?

I was watching some old UFC Unleashed marathon late at night the other day when I noticed something very interesting.

Over the course of the five hours I watched (don’t judge) BJ Penn fought three or four times. By the third time BJ had come up I noticed something.

You can predict EVERY BJ Penn fight by how fat or skinny he looks before the bell rings.

Skinny BJ Penn is a monster of a fighter, and whether or not you like him (I don’t), you have to respect the skills he brings to the cage.

The last time we saw skinny BJ Penn was in his five-round beatdown of Diego Sanchez. Which coincidentally sent Sanchez packing for the Welterweight division.

Fat BJ Penn also known as the lazy, overly arrogant BJ Penn who showed up to fight Frankie Edgar in Abu Dhabi and lost a close decision.

Now the question is which version of Penn is going to show up Saturday?

Earlier this week Penn posted a video of himself in Boston where his shoulders look skinny and in shape, but we could not see the stomach area, which is the key indicator of BJ shapeliness.

This may sound weird, but take it from someone who watched WAY too much UFC the other night, BJ Penn DOESN’T win fights when he has a gut.

The knock on BJ has always seemed to be that he had all the talent in the world but just didn’t seem to have the work ethic or the intensity to be on all the time like a Geogres St. Pierre.

After the loss to Edgar, you would think Penn would be training all out to avenge his first loss at lightweight since 2002. But you never know with Penn.

In my opinion, Frankie Edgar deserved the first fight. It was close and tactical but he did more to win, including being the first lightweight to take BJ Penn down that I can recall.

But he beat fat BJ Penn.

Which besides the closeness of the decision is the reason Penn got an immediate rematch.

Can Edgar beat an in shape thin BJ Penn?

Hopefully we’ll find out Saturday Night.
