UFC 109: Couture vs Coleman and Other Unlikely Predictions

I’m not usually one for fight card predictions, but I felt the need to step back from my usual social commentary for a moment and just do my best to enjoy the fights this weekend.

Then again, I can’t usually help myself:

I love MMA.

I love to over-analyze.

I love to over-analyze MMA.

Anyway, here are my “Quick-like-Mike-Swick” predictions for UFC 109 (grab a pen):

Randy Couture vs Mark Coleman

Not sure what I can say about this fight that I haven’t already said. Whatever the outcome, expect a great performance by both men—improved striking by Couture and improved cardio by Coleman.

Miss this fight at your own peril, fight fans.

Unlikely Prediction: Couture, by rear-naked choke in the third round.

Nathan Marquardt vs Chael Sonnen

Like most outspoken fighters, I highly doubt that Sonnen will be able to back up his words in the ring against the likes of Marquardt, who has never looked better by the way.

I eagerly await Marquardt stuffing his fist into Sonnen’s pie hole.

The winner gets Silva? Be careful what you wish for, guys.

Unlikely Prediction: Marquardt, by devastating knock-out punch in the first round.

Mike Swick vs Paulo Thiago

No offence to Thiago, but we’re all definitely going to see a new and improved Mike Swick in this fight.

Something was off the last time he fought. His confidence looked low.

Rumour has it, eh, that Swick ran over his dog while backing out of the driveway on his way to the last fight. Kidding—but he sure fought like it.

This time, he’ll be looking to redeem himself by showing us his “old” self.

Unlikely Prediction: Swick, by fastest knock-out in UFC history.

Matt Serra vs Frank Trigg

I should be careful what I say here, as I have both of these guys as friends on Facebook. That’s a joke, by the way.

The trash talk has been done in a funny way, which is rare. I doubt that we will see any real animosity between these two guys. The “tramp stamp” tattoo remark by Serra has already earned him the verbal KO.

Unlikely Prediction: Serra, after Trigg eats some bad shrimp and vomits all over Herb Dean.

Let’s say…second round.

Robert Emerson vs Phillipe Nover

So long as Phillipe can stay conscious, I really like his odds of winning this fight. Emerson is impressive, but Nover has the cement in his hands. I would also give the conditioning edge to Nover.

Unlikely Prediction: Nover, by ground and pound stoppage in the second round.

Rolles Gracie vs Mustapha al Turk

Call me prejudiced. Call me biased. I don’t care what you say, I’m rooting for the world’s largest Gracie.

Unlikely Prediction: Gracie, by arm-bar submission in the first round.

Happy betting, fight fans.
