MMA Hot Topics: Why The UFC Should Kick Dana White

Welcome to the first in my upcoming series of articles called Hot Topics, not because I’m writing them in the summer but because they are the most disputed arguments in the world of MMA.
My first topic, Dana White, and what a place to start. I have great respect for Dana White, whom I credit for making the UFC and MMA what it is today.
However, I have a few negative points against the UFC’s enigmatic president.
Firstly, White is holding the UFC back, not through his lack of leadership but because of his antics at press conferences.
White is one of the few businessmen with power who speak their mind, but there is a reason you won’t find Roger Goodell saying that the AFL is smalltime. It just isn’t done, even if it is true.
A spiderman quote comes to mind: “With great power comes great responsibility.” Obviously, White has no idea how to conduct himself sportingly around the media. He seems to speak before he thinks.
White seems to think the UFC is so big that he can’t be challenged.
But if White thinks the UFC is so bulletproof why doesn’t he schedule his events to coincide with big events (not boxing) and then see how the UFC does?
Even if Fedor V Brock went up against the Superbowl the MMA event would be killed.
But you can’t insult every organization out there all at once.
Dana White has insulted EA Sports, NFL, Strikeforce, Affliction and his most sought after trophy—Fedor. And he seriously believes this is the way to do business, and most of the time the other organizations act sporting and make White look (as we would say where I’m from) a mug.
Dana will continue acting cocky until he comes up against an organization that is much bigger than him, and can be bothered to destroy him.
The Fedor issue is an interesting and important one, why wont he sign with the UFC?
“Doesn’t want to be beaten,” claim some committed UFC fans. “His management team wants the UFC to build a stadium in Russia.”
The real reason is that Dana White has insulted Fedor. Fedor is a man who deals on respect, he respects his opponents and they respect him. Dana White bad-mouthed him saying “he is scared,” and thus Fedor lost his respect for him.
As the UFC looks to transform into a mainstream sport that can rival the NFL, NBA, and MLB they need to dispell the common perception that the sport is “human cockfighting.”
Having a megalomaniac leader who insults everyone outside UFC is not the way to go about it.
Well that’s my first article in the hot topics collection. I await your reaction.
