Marquardt suggest that he’s got the best shot to beat Silva at 185

With all the talk of the UFC’s middleweight champ Anderson Silva moving on from the middleweight division, why would anyone in the division even worry about facing him. Word from the Silva camp is that they don’t want to rematch Dan Henderson. He’s the only guy to take a round in 11 UFC fights against “The Spider” during a loss at UFC 82. If it’s not Hendo, who else deserves a shot? Nate Marquardt still believes he’s the guy in spite of the fact that he was blown out at UFC 73 by Silva. He says if he gets the chance again, an altered mindset is key:
“I have a lot of tools to beat the things that he does. I’m a different fighter now,” Marquardt told ProMMARadio‘s Larry Pepe. “The way I fought him, I didn’t go out and fight to win. Now I’m going for knockouts and I’m going for the submission.”
Marquardt says you also need a strong gameplan to take out Silva, who at this point looks nearly unbeatable when he’s on his game. He said the Silva fight against Forrest Griffin is a prime example:
“Forrest had a horrible gameplan going in. A lot of it was the outside pressure to make an exciting fight. Forrest rushed in and just got caught. Then he did it a second time and got knocked out.”
Listen to Marquardt with Pepe:
Marquardt was also pretty critical of Henderson’s chances at beating Silva, if he ever gets that rematch:
“I believe when I rematch (Silva), he’s going to have the belt. Dan’s standup is pretty one-dimensional. He’s a great fighter and has a lot of power, but Anderson’s going to be able to deal with that. He has a lot more tools on the feet. I don’t think Henderson has enough tools to finish on the ground.”
Make to sure to listen to the end of conversation when Marquardt addresses the issues of teammates squaring off. The 185 and 205 pounders at Jackson’s Submission Fighting have repeatedly stated they will ot fight one another. Marquardt said they can’t be made to under circumstances.
