Takedown defense thwarts any shot at ‘JT Money’ win over Hieron

It was too big a step up and it came without enough notice. Jesse Taylor is a good wrestler when it comes to a reality show but against a seasoned guy like Jay Hieron, he had no shot. Taylor attempted 10 takedowns and only succeeded with one. In doing so, he gassed himself early in the fight. Hieron often transitioned the takedown attempts into top control and rolled to a unanimous decision (30-27 on all three cards) victory in the final non-televised fight at tonight’s Strikeforce card in San Jose.
Taylor came out with a punch-and-shoot strategy. But the attempts developed too slowly to fool a veteran like Hieron. Hieron is also well-versed in takedown defense training at Xtreme Couture where they house great welterweight and lightweight wrestlers like Frank Trigg, Tyson Griffin and Gray Maynard.
The crowd booed loudly at the end of the fight. Hieron really never went for the kill on the feet. He threaten to finish Taylor in the second when he got his back and worked for a rear-naked choke. Taylor showed guts in freeing himself from the bad position. But most of the fight featured Hieron pounding away at Taylor in full guard.
Hieron is now 18-4 with six straight wins. He couldn’t have been thrilled with having to fight Taylor, a late fill-in for Nick Diaz, who refused to take his prefight drug test with the state of California.
Taylor came in riding a seven-fight win streak. His last win came in Japan three weeks ago. He was told about this fight on Monday and had trouble cutting the weight, missing by two pounds in his first attempt yesterday. The weight cut may been too much because he looked sapped in the second and third rounds.
On Sunday morning at 1:30 a.m. ET, ESPNRadio1100 presents the only live postfight show from the Strikeforce press conference. LISTEN HERE.
